Botswana is a landlocked country in southern Africa, bordering with South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe and meeting with Zambia at a single point.
A flat country, Botswana is dominated by the Kalahari Desert, which covers up to 70% of its land surface. The Okavango Delta, the world's largest inland delta, lies in the northwest of the country, while the Makgadikgadi Pans, a large system of salt pans, lie in the north of the country.
Home to a large variety of animal, bird and plant species, Botswana boasts many national parks, amongst them the world-famous Chobe National Park and the Moremi Game Reserve.
Summer (September - April)
Frequent rain and thunderstorms; days and nights are hot but cool off after rain spells. Daytime temperatures generally range from 28 - 36 degrees Celsius.
Winter (May - August)
Days are dry and cold, with the temperature dropping drastically at night and early morning - often to below freezing.
Until independence in the 1960s Botswana was a poor British protectorate known as Bechuanaland. However, since independence Botswana has gained an international reputation as a peaceful and increasingly prosperous democratic state.
Botswana has one of the world's fastest growing economies. This is based on the mining of diamonds and other minerals. The increase in state revenue that this mining has generated has been used to extensively develop educational and health facilities across the country.
Botswana continues to be a peaceful country, and is currently under the rule of the democratically elected President, His Excellency Seretse Khama Ian Khama.
A peaceful people, the Batswana (collective noun for a group of people from Botswana) have never been a warring nation, preferring instead to call on diplomacy and talks.
And although made up of many different tribes, the majority of people in Botswana are of Tswana origin and speak Setswana.
